Look, all things are relative, but even by the standards of a Russian oligarch, this is not financial penury, you know, and that's kind of been the marketing of the book.
She's gone on Oprah, she's gone on Drew Barrymore, and she's been talking about how she's a cautionary tale to women to go into marriage with her.
Her rock bottom was doing laps of Martha's Vineyard and coming home to her beautiful bungalow and admiring her.
That's what I mean.
No, but I think it's fair to say that she exaggerated the extent of the jeopardy.
And she probably did that for a number of reasons.
I mean, maybe it felt very real to her that she was on the verge of losing everything.
And maybe it felt...
Maybe it was a sort of a narrative device that she wanted to drive people along and keep readers with her.
Maybe the editor suggested.
If you reread the Modern Love column, it's interesting that she doesn't really mention money at all in it.
I don't think she mentions money once in it.
Whereas the book is largely taken up with money.
But what I came back to when I thought about this, I read the New Yorker piece and I sat and I thought about it for a while and I thought, does it really matter if she exaggerated a small bit?
And like, does it matter if her kind of her rock bottom and her miserable divorce is my wildest dreams can actually scenario?
Would that, I would end up in that kind of financial precarity.
But I do think there's a really important message in there that's getting lost.
And that is that, you know, she says that she wants women to consider what might happen to them if their marriage ends.
And I think women need to consider what will happen to them when it doesn't end.
You know, what happens to women going into marriage, even marriages that work really well, even very successful marriages.
