I'm Jenny Kane.
I oversee our career and technical education portfolio at Bloomberg Philanthropies.
In the U.S., there's a lot of students that might not want to go directly into four-year college, and we think that there should be options and opportunities to high-growth, high-demand industries.
And in the U.S., a lot of that is right now in health care.
So what we're focused on is giving young people the opportunity within high school to get industry-recognized credentials and work-based learning and training to go into those jobs directly if that's what they want to do.
I think it really depends on the industry and the person, but I think students should have options.
And for industries like health care, where there are many, many jobs that don't require that college degree, it makes a lot of sense for students to start in the workforce and then earn additional credentials or degrees over time.
They don't need a four-year degree to get a job.
A lot of students don't want to take on the debt of college,
especially after COVID and with sort of AI coming online, students want to know that their jobs are not going away.
And these are jobs that are not going to be decimated with automation and with AI.
These are jobs that need people.
And in the US, there's 2 million open jobs right now in the healthcare sector, and that's expected to double in the next five years.
