We're already living in a culture that, you know, whilst the word eugenics is a dirty word to many of us, silently the principles behind eugenics of maximising your offspring and making sure that you have the optimal children that you can have, that has already entered the culture in America at least.
Yes, they would.
And many people would say, you know, what right do people have to make those decisions?
It's up to each individual to decide what they want from their family.
But the thing is, whilst maybe at the moment, the majority of people wouldn't want to make those choices, enough people do.
And those people may have a biological advantage in the future.
I felt like it is inevitable, sadly to say, because I don't necessarily want it to be.
I felt like I worry a bit about applying the kind of, you know, move fast and break things Silicon Valley mindset to something as important as human life, because this is not...
a piece of technology like an app or an electric car or a driverless car.
This is something where if you make a mistake, it's going to exist forever.
There are human rights issues and there are also issues with the trajectory of human evolution.
And the idea that we need to be bold and experiment just shouldn't really apply here.
But walking around New York, going to see Cathy involved in debates with ethicists, there seemed to be enough support for the idea that people like her should be able to stop heritable diseases.
And also, you've got Sam Altman, who's the CEO of OpenAI, who
owns ChatGPT, he is investing in a rival company called Preventive.
This is a field that is awash with cash.
And when you've got parents who just want the best for their children, that's a very, very powerful set of drives impelling this forward.
