For Lazarus to wonder why his friend, the one who loves him, does not come.

Does Jesus not care?

Is Jesus indifferent to our suffering?

Does Jesus feel no burden to carry our grief with us, to help us, to heal us?

See, the guiding truth that we have to remind ourselves as we read this text is that Jesus loved these people deeply.

John tells us multiple times in the text, we will see him weep over the death of Lazarus tomorrow.

He loves them.

That is fact.

It is guiding truth foundational to all that Jesus does here.

If we look closely at the text, John says Jesus loved this family so he stayed.

His delay was because he loved them.

Now it sounds backwards, but let's try to understand with our guiding truth.

Jesus loves these people.

So what's going on here?

Well, Jesus has said that this sickness will not end in death.

But in just a few verses, he tells his disciples that Lazarus has already died in his delay.

Jesus knows at this moment when he speaks that Lazarus is already dead.

So he means that ultimately, Lazarus will not remain dead.

He hints at the resurrection to come.

But he does say that the sickness, the death of Lazarus, comes for God's glory, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it.
