And somebody, Seamus Milne it was, sort of said something.
He said, you know what, Jeremy, you're basically very English.
You're a member of the National Trust.
Why don't people recognise that?
And so, yes, the policies we put forward would have made, I believe, fundamental and effective difference to ordinary people's lives and made it a better country.
And I still believe that, and I'm not changing on that.
I was under pressure to try and compromise on a lot of policies.
I said, no, these are the policies we're going to put forward, the ones that you enunciated to the good people of Maidenhead.
And so I think that what was really at stake here was that the predominantly right-wing meat of this country
didn't really totally disagree with some of the policies.
Some they did, but not all of them.
What they didn't like was the idea that there was a big political movement growing around social change and they didn't know where that was heading.
So I think it was the direction of travel that they were more concerned about.
We've all got flaws, and I've got plenty, I'm sure, one of which is I'm very awkward.
