And publishing is a really, really difficult thing to do.
And by the time the noughts come along, you've got these writers in their 20s or 30s who are thinking two things, really.
And Wynonna is one of them, one of these writers.
One, how am I gonna get read?
Two, therefore, how am I gonna get recognition?
And three, what are we to do about publishing?
It's a disaster on the continent.
I mean, when he won the Caine Prize, he actually cobbled together a piece that had been sitting around with some other editor, took it back to an online magazine called G21, had it published there, and sent it to the Caine Prize as a submission.
The Caine judges, wherever they were, London probably, says, oh, you can't have this.
We can't be doing with this.
This is not a real publication.
I mean, it's an online mag, you know, I mean.
It's no good to us and we ought to see this physical publisher.
My nan said, you know, how the fuck are you going to get a representative sample of African writers who you're going to be able to make your judging base, you know, because actually you're never going to find them if that's the way that you're looking for African work.
