But for essential workers at Boston Medical Center, like surgery resident Colton Yon, that's not an option.

I found him trudging through the snow after finishing an overnight shift.

How would you describe walking home in this weather?

Cold and wet.

I guess part of the deal.

We love what we do.

The storm is snarling travel across the region.

Streets are coated in snow, and airports spanning from Boston down to D.C.

have canceled nearly all flights.

Patricia Andoweg was supposed to fly from Boston to Australia to celebrate her 90th birthday with family this week.

But thanks to a series of delays and now the shutdown-induced cancellations, she missed her connecting flight.

Andoweg says at this point, it's not worth the trip.

I call it the journey to nowhere.

Airlines are phasing in the 10% reduction in flights, so cancellations are expected to become more widespread in the days ahead.
