And I remember my sister and I pulling out of the driveway and my dad running out the front door and just tapping on our window and saying one more thing, don't turn on the news today.

And this was before, you know, we got alerts of every bad thing happening in the world, you know, sent to our phone.

And so went to school, came home there.

We had this guest room attached to the garage that had this TV in it that I would watch all the shows I wasn't allowed to watch because my parents couldn't hear it.

And so I go in there before they knew I was home and I turned on the TV.

And that was when I just saw it on every channel was Bernie Madoff stealing $64 billion in his Ponzi scheme.

It was this surreal moment.

outer body experience because not only did I in that moment realize we just my parents probably just lost everything they worked for that our family was now in swept up into this

frenzy of um just not knowing which way was up and uh but i will tell you it was um wow i think sometimes you know as speakers you're like always trying to find what's the silver lining and that took a long time to figure out what that was i bet but it happened and

When I visited him in prison, which, again, I don't really talk about a lot.

Yeah.

Did you even know that?

But so when he was sentenced to 150 years, it was in Butner, North Carolina, which I live in Raleigh.

And so I was like, 45 minutes from me.

This is kind of just.

What do I do with that?

And so I wrote him a letter and asked if I could visit him.

He was very, very yes, because not a lot of people were, obviously.

And when I went there, you know, and sat in front of him, I kind of, you know, thought he was going to try to explain it to me in a way that I wouldn't understand, you know, stock markets and just stuff that I didn't get.

But he told me something that truly kind of changed the trajectory of my life and my work.
