Ahead of jury selection, the judge in the case denied Meta's request to restrict recordings and streamings of the trial.

The attorneys for Jose Ibarra say his trial attorney did not ask for a competency evaluation ahead of proceedings and that they believe he has a congenital deficiency that makes him incapable of preparing for and participating in his own defense.

After Ibarra was convicted and in response to this motion from his new attorneys, the judge ordered a mental evaluation last summer.

And said Friday, that assessment found Ibarra was competent and had been at the time of trial a year prior.

Ibarra was convicted of murdering 22-year-old Laken Riley while she was jogging on the University of Georgia campus in Athens.

Prosecutors say Ibarra tried to sexually assault Riley before killing her.

His DNA was found under her fingernails.
