Hawaii passed a law that prohibits someone with a concealed carry permit from bringing a gun onto private property that is open to the public unless the property owner gives permission.

A few years ago, in its Bruin ruling, the Supreme Court not only ensured one's right to carry a handgun outside the home for self-defense, but also said gun laws need to be consistent with the country's historical tradition of firearms regulation.

Officials in Hawaii said their law satisfies Bruin, that it balances the needs of property owners with the rights of gun owners.

But Hawaii residents Jason and Allison Wolford sued.

While the Ninth Circuit Court sided with the state, the Supreme Court has agreed to consider Hawaii's ban.
