A memo out of the State Department seen by Fox News Digital says they're pausing visa processing for 75 countries to ensure applicants do not become a public charge.
A public charge is someone who is likely to rely on taxpayer-funded benefits like WIC or emergency Medicaid or certain programs funded by individual states.
Determining whether one is a public charge can take into consideration one's age, health, and English proficiency.
The countries impacted by this updated interpretation of the public charge rule include Somalia, Russia, Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Yemen, Egypt, and Nigeria.

Former President Bill Clinton sent a letter to House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer accusing him of dismissing subpoenas to those he considers friends, writing that two law firms have done an analysis finding the subpoenas for the former president are invalid.
Comer responded outside of what would have been a deposition hearing room.
He noted the files revealed Clinton had flown on Epstein's plane, for example, at least 27 times.
Congressman Tim Burchett said they will bring up contempt of Congress proceedings against Clinton.
Brandon Banfield is charged with killing his wife, Christine, in 2023, along with a man named Joseph Ryan inside the couple's home.
Prosecutors say Banfield and the family au pair, Juliana Margulies, with whom he was having a romantic relationship, lured Ryan to the house by setting up a profile for Christine on a fetish website.
They then told investigators they went inside the bedroom and saw Ryan try to stab Christine, so they shot Ryan.
Investigators call this an elaborate setup and note that Margulies has already admitted to trying to lure Ryan to the house.
She's already pled guilty to a reduced manslaughter charge.

Former Auburn University football coach Tommy Tuberville ran for the Senate in 2020 and won, but rather than run for a second term, he's opting instead to run for governor.
He officially filed the paperwork Monday and said from the state GOP headquarters.
