I view such cases as instances of bad faith, where I'm sort of going through these, you know, radiocinations so that I can justify to myself going to the party.
It's not that backhanded.
It's not that deceptive.
It's, you know, I'm genuinely trying.
And this seems to me like a reason now, because I want to go to the party so badly.
But later I'll realize that it wasn't one, right?

And I'll see that I was acting out of weakness.

That's a wonderful way to put the point.
You know, I do feel guilt when I realize my failure.
And I think that's the important characteristic identified in the classic example, right?
I feel pain in the moment because I realize that there's something wrong.
And this pain reveals my moral interest in being good.
It's pretty committed to the fact that we can feel that feeling at lots of different levels of evil.
