Well survivors are often expected not to talk about it.

Families who are involved don't talk about it.

Governments underfund efforts to stop it.

Even journalists and researchers sometimes struggle to cover it without

turning entire cultures into caricatures.

And the rest of us just file it away as something awful happening somewhere else.

When everybody has a reason not to look too closely, that collective silence doesn't just surround FGM, it protects it.

And that's why we're talking about it.

And we're not talking about a few isolated cases here.

We're talking hundreds of millions of women and girls.

Sure, but the comparison, it's worth holding on to.

Not because it's the same thing, it definitely isn't, but because it forces us to consider both practices.

But I want to underline the difference immediately.

So male circumcision, it may be unnecessary and it raises real consent questions, but it's not the same as removing a girl's clitoris, narrowing a vaginal opening,

Or cutting healthy genital tissue from a child outside medical necessity.

Anatomically, that's just not what's happening.

Oh yeah, that's so gross too.

Yeah, it's very gross.

Yeah, it's really hard, especially for men to imagine, because there's just no real comparison.

It's not about equivalence, it's about the normalization of it.
