Correct.

Yeah.

But all of those terms are squirmy.

But mutilation is the term preferred by the human rights organizations whose data I've drawn from.

I also think it best reflects the severity of what's actually happening.

So some find the term mutilation is an external judgment that shuts down the conversation.

But we should sit with the tension of that vocabulary.

Let's just go F GM from here out 'cause it's it's a little uncomfortable to say.

But it refers to a variety of procedures involving the partial or total removal of the female external genitalia or other injury to the female genital organs for non medical reasons.

And that's the official definition used by the World Health Organization and the United Nations.

And as you mentioned, it's also referred to as female circumcision or female genital cutting, just depending on context and who's speaking.

The World Health Organization classifies FGM into four types.

So type one is called a clitoridectomy.

That's the partial or sometimes total removal of the clitoris and potentially the hood of skin surrounding it.

Then type two is called excision, and that involves removal of the clitoris and the labia minora, which are, you know, the inner lips of the vulva, sometimes also including the labia majora.

And type three is called infibulation, and it's the most severe.

So it involves cutting and repositioning the labia to create a seal, deliberately narrowing the vaginal opening.

And type four is like a catch-off or any other harmful procedures to the female genitalia for non-medical purposes.

Things like pricking, piercing, scraping, burning happens.
