Monet exhibited Impression Sunrise, which he painted in his hometown of La Havre.
The painting was a muted color palette of the emerging dawn, an intriguing composition of orange and yellow hues, casting light from the sky onto the rippling blue sea and fishing boats of the industrial port.
The brushstrokes were informal and natural.
But unfortunately, the painting was not well received by one art critic, Louis Lerat.
He wrote, wallpaper in its early stages is much more finished than that.
The critic likened the painting to an impression or crude rudimentary sketch, an insult to Monet's work.
