So I wrote a version of Jerusalem in 2003, and I didn't meet Mark until 2008.
And the version I wrote in 2003, we read it through at the Royal Court and it was, I think the nicest thing I could say about it was that as a task, it was beyond me.
Just to orchestrate, first of all, just technically for that many characters was something I didn't have the skill to do.
And the play was without a motor.
And it was kind of, it was really pretty meretricious.
And I threw it, I mean, after the read-through, I threw it in the bin outside the Royal Court.
And came back the next year, gave it another go, and it was worse.
And I decided to just put it in the bin.
It turned out that somehow Mark had got hold of a copy of it when he was running the Globe and had read it and had seen something at the heart of it.
And so we met at the Royal Court.
And Mark came in.
I remember we had about an hour-long meeting in the summer of 2008, and he sat in the office, the artistic director's office upstairs.
He didn't take his cycle helmet off for the entire hour we were sitting there.
And he just talked about what he liked about it, what it spoke to him, and it kind of inspired me to pick it up again.
And something, some midpoint between...
meeting Mark and having got better at writing plays in the interim meant that I could sort of pull it off.
But I think it was, if it felt like,
When you saw him doing it, it felt like when you read it, it's because it was bespoke for him.
Right.
It was made for him, for meeting him.
