Now, looking at average incomes, looking at average debt to income ratios, and looking at that average credit card debt alone, we figure that a good 20% of your credit card debt should be able to be repaid by the end of 2018.
So including budgeting, obviously, payment automation, things like the island approach where you use different credit card
for each one of your balances, that can be done.
It just has to be done strategically.
Over 50% of Americans don't have a rainy day fund.
And again, just looking back at 2017, this was a huge year in terms of emergencies, whether it's a natural disaster, whether it's losing a job or not seeing wage growth.
It really is important to have something in the bank to curb any future debt you might have paying for one of these emergencies quickly when you don't have the funds to.
So we recommend adding one month's pay to your emergency fund by the end of the year.
Eventually, funds should look like about 12 to 18 months take-home income.
That's not going to happen overnight.
We recommend chipping away at it over time.
And this one month's pay can be done in tandem with paying down that 20% of your credit card debt and budgeting.
So it's nothing really complicated.
