Listen, this should have happened a long time ago when the Associated Press was booted out of the Oval Office and Air Force One for refusing to call the Gulf of Mexico the Gulf of America.
To me, that was the moment when news organizations should have banded together and said we're standing behind.
I think it would have set the tone much sooner.
But remember, that was at a time when we were coming into the second term.
He had just, you know, basically extracted these extortion payments from ABC and CBS.
I was so disturbed that when I left CNN, I left with the message, don't give in to the lies, don't give in to the fear, because there was a lot of fear in the water back then.
It wasn't just news organizations.
You had major law firms.
You had universities.
all bending the knee.
And I think it emboldened him, much like the immunity decision at the Supreme Court.
It emboldened him to go down this authoritarian path.
And so I do think, yes, had the news organizations acted sooner, it might have been able to nip this in the bud.
We shouldn't be having White House correspondence dinners with a president of the United States who wants to do away with the free press.
We shouldn't be clinking champagne glasses with people like Stephen Miller, who
is locking up migrants in awful detention camps all over this country.
I think the press needs to stand up, not just for our individual right to have access to the president and cover things here in Washington, but for our democracy, for our Constitution, for our Bill of Rights.
I think some of that has been lost in all of this.
We are American citizens in addition to being journalists.
And the least we can do is fight for our right to a free press in this country, fight for a right to not have our press passes taken away.
