Whenever we go away, I always come back with paintings of where we've been rather than photographs.
Well, we've got photographs as well, but it's nice to have a painting.

If you're somewhere, let's say you go on holiday.

I'm going to go to Scarborough.
And if you're painting something, you're looking at it intently for quite a long time.

And you get a real sense of somewhere.
That's another thing about, you know, when you're filming, you know, if you're acting and you say, right, we're going to film in this field here.
a field that you would never even dream of going in but you're gonna have to you're gonna spend six hours there yeah you get to know it really well you do every nook and cranny don't you yeah so it's the same with painting if you look at something intently you get to see it really it's the same when i'm painting birds i get to know them really well yeah
If they're moving about and stuff, do you have to just be patient and wait?
Well, no, I just take photographs of them because you can't paint them flitting about.
No, no, that must be hard.
I know a lot of birders who go around with big, long lenses taking brilliant photographs, but I think I'm the only one who goes home and paints them.
That I know of, yeah.
Yeah, yeah.
It's like I'll go on a website on an app and they'll find out if there's something rare knocking about.
Like, recently it was...
a red flank blue tail, which is like a robin, came over from America, so I thought, I'm going to have to go and see it before I can allow myself to paint it.
