And is it possible to distinguish a poorly designed chart from one that lies intentionally?
I liked how you illustrated some of the points in your book by placing correct versions and deceptive versions of charts side by side.
I think readers will find this very helpful.
You know, one of the things that this brings up is something that I've always felt.
I've always felt that people who get things immediately are not always the best teachers of the material because most people don't understand things immediately.
And it helps if the teacher has gone through making the same mistakes and can understand where the students are coming from.
And what you just pointed out is...
that you've done basically the same thing in this book.
You've described some of the problems that you've run into, the misinterpretations, etc., that have enabled you to say, oh, yeah, that's what I did, and hopefully present people from doing that by reading your book.
You know, when I was listening to you, I was reminded of Newton's remark about when people called attention to how brilliant he'd been.
He said, I feel like someone who's just been on the seashore playing with a few pebbles while the great ocean of truth lay undiscovered in front of me.
you know, Einstein felt that most of the people who are genuinely brilliant realize that, you know, realize what they don't know as much as what they do know.
Yeah, I think you're right.
Anyway, getting back to your book, what are logarithmic scales and for which types of charts are they useful or deceptive?
You know, earlier in the interview, you mentioned that some charts lie because the objects that encode the data are twisted or truncated in some way.
I know there are lots of examples in your book, but could you describe one or two examples that people might be able to recognize?
Yeah, I remember things like that.
I've seen that on the truncation effect.
I've seen a lot.
You know, one of the things that's happening nowadays is obviously there's a predominance of social media, and social media is one of the ways that charts are easily transmitted.
