I've been digging for a few hours when Mr.
Jackal starts hollering in a language I don't understand and pulls my hose up.
I climb up after it in mister Jackal's cursing, in English now, about cats and sloppy work.
And when I follow him into the front yard?
I see what he's talking about.
Cats everywhere, screeching, running,
On fire.
Some set shrubs ablaze, others have the decency to keel over in the middle of the street, leaving behind a sticky, smoking pile of bones, poking through charred flesh and barred teeth.
The smell is nothing worse than firebug, nothing close to Olga, who I'm not certain isn't a rotting corpse.
He doesn't need to tell me this is firebug's work.
Kid got out of hand this time, he says.
One cat escapes the hose and stumbles in a fiery ball up the block.

Jackals tells me to go after the fucking thing.
Chasing burning cats isn't my job.
I don't even have to remind him that.
His face changes so fast and so horribly that I'd rather not argue.
I pick up one of the spare shovels at the top of the hole and leave my property for the first time in months.
It occurs to me as I step off the lawn in the direction of the Jones's house, which used to belong to the millers, that I haven't so much as gone grocery shopping or mowed the lawn since mister Jackals and his band of hell creatures entered my life.
Other than wipe my own keister and take my own showers, I've been waited on hand and foot.
