It's now orbiting the sun.
Despite its failure to complete its original mission,
The Nazomie craft marked a turning point, after which Mars exploration has slowly been becoming a much more international endeavor.
And the same year, nineteen ninety eight, that Nazomi launched.
The US Space Agency was working on another ambitious Mars mission.
This one was intended to put another lander on Mars along with two small probes.
and another spaceship into orbit to support the landing craft.
That mission failed in part for a frustratingly simple reason.
The Mars Climate Orbiter, as it was called.
Burned up in the Martian atmosphere due to a navigation error caused by a basic mistake.
The spacecraft programmers had failed to translate so-called English measurements into the metric system.
But the history of Mars exploration
Like so much in science and engineering.
And life itself.
It's a story of learning from mistakes.
As much as from successes.
And space scientists remained determined to push forward in studying the planet.
Just over a year later.
NASA sent off another Mars orbiter called the Mars Odyssey.
And this one.
