It's enough to make us wonder whether actual humans may touch Martian soil.
Sometime in the not too distant future.
And in fact
The Perseverance Rover's mission was planned for just that eventuality.
Oh.
Perhaps not in the way you'd think.
The rover carries a drill designed to collect samples from Mars to be analyzed back on Earth.
The idea is that a future mission could pick them up.
And bring them home to this planet for detailed study.
So while the mission controllers weren't expecting any imminent human mission to the red planet,
They are planning for human hands to possibly touch Martian soil.
Here on earth.
The return of anything at all from Mars to Earth.
Would be a quantum leap forward in space exploration.
Mars missions so far have been one-way trips.
due to the difficulty of powering a spaceship, to take off from the planet and return home.
Given the exponential rate of development and discovery so far though,
As the age of flight has evolved into the age of interplanetary and even interstellar travel.
We may expect to see many new firsts in the years to come.
