They also returned data about Martian gravity.
Magnetic fields.
And temperatures.
Which ranged from freezing
Cool by earthly standards.
After that, the Soviets again launched a volley of craft towards Mars in July and August of nineteen seventy three.
But all were plagued with major problems.
