Hi, I'm Joanna Stern, a tech journalist and the author of I Am Not a Robot, my year using AI to do almost everything.
My question for Gina Raimondo is this.
I am currently reporting on a company that pays low wage workers to wear head-mounted cameras, and they're wearing these while doing their jobs, including house cleaning, so that the data can be used to train robots.
In the short term, those workers earn money.
In the long term, they may be helping train the very robots that could replace them.
And we've seen this already in customer service.
What do you say to someone who's literally training the AI that is going to create their replacement?
Is retraining enough or do we need new economic models that let workers share in the value that they're helping create?
