And so you may be setting yourself up to become a misfit.
Especially if the recruiter you're working with is with an outside search firm, but who's had a lot of experience at recruiting other individuals, other managers, other executives to that company.
He or she then is going to know what made for their success and why they were the right pick for that culture.
At the same time, if that recruiter has done a lot of his or her homework, they know about your background, the culture you're coming from, and should be able to understand whether your puzzle piece fits into that puzzle of the new employer.
It's more than that though.
You need to know what are the unwritten rules of the road, what is or isn't acceptable behavior, whether or not it actually complies with the written rules.
There are companies in which superstars, particularly in the sales arena, they get away with bending the rules.
They can do stuff, sign deals for large sums without getting the required corporate approval.
And so if there are different rules that are written and unwritten,
That's part of the culture that you ought to know about before you join.
Well, that means are they walking the talk?
You see a lot of companies with mission statements about we believe in collaboration and we believe in transparency and we believe in putting customers first.
So again, are the actions matching the words?
And the way you do that is you not only talk to people that have worked there for a long time, but you talk to people that used to work there, preferably those who were in jobs similar to the one you're being considered for.
And you try also to expose yourself to people at all levels of the company, not just the one you're joining.
Well, for the most part, it's a pipe dream.
But obviously, it would give you a great bird's eye view.
You would be the proverbial fly on the wall.
But one of the examples I cite in the column is a woman who did just that.
She was looking to perhaps permanently join a startup company, which has some pretty radical approaches to how they operate.
