If you care about the work you do and you want it to survive.
Being good is not enough.
Nobody told you this job would involve this much emotional labor, right?
But if you've been doing UX or product design for more than five minutes, you already know that a huge part of this work is dealing with people.
Their fears, their confusion, their territorialism.
They're insecurities.
Some days it definitely feels like your actual job is therapist, crisis manager, group counselor.
And honestly, that's not far off.
Okay, because good design, good UX is change.
And change makes people freak the fuck out.
Here's what they don't tell you in in design school, right?
Or in that boot camp.
Your proposals and your wireframes and your diagrams will be ignored.
Your user research will be questioned.
Your usability insights will be dismissed.
And when that happens, it won't be because the work is bad.
It'll be because someone in the room is really scared.
Scared of looking dumb, scared of being replaced, scared of losing control, scared of change.
And that fear doesn't always look like fear.
A lot of times what it looks like is an endless nitpick over, you know, a fucking button color.
