Because I thought people showed me that I was good enough to go further.
I was just limited by the resources of the small label and everything.
So I moved to Nashville in 97.
And got my first major label deal at 99 on Giant Records, 99-2000.
And I was signed over there when Blake Shelton was signed over there.
And that's how we became friends.
uh we were part of uh giant records as we like to call it the artist protection program and uh we we sat there for a couple years whining together about when was you know giant gonna put the save saviors of giant records out there and um they never did i came along when uh giant was bought by warner brothers i was moved along with the furniture i was bottling with furniture and so was blake he went off to have these big hits and and uh warner brothers
Didn't like that I was a traditional country guy.
They wanted me to be more like, you know, flats or they had envisioned me being something like one trick pony or kind of more rock and country or no trick pony.
So trick pony or rascal flats, something like that.
And I was just, I could not have disagreed more with that.
But Jim Ed Norman was the president of that label.
And he did something that no other label would ever do.
He gave me a check for 50 grand and said, your record contract is still here if you want it.
But here's $50,000 to go find you another deal that you're happy with.
And if you don't find one you're happy with, you still got your spot here.
We'll just...
you know, get something, we'll get along somehow with the A&R stuff.
So I thought that was a very unusual thing for a Nashville label to do.
