The NIV Bible I grew up with, we used to call it the nearly inspired version, actually has these words when it says, I am convinced.
Not maybe, not perhaps.
He says, I am convinced.
This triumphant statement is the result of Paul's conviction that God is adequate as our keeper and as our end.
And what is he convinced of?
He is convinced that nothing, literally nothing, can overcome the love of Christ Jesus in us.
He knows that there are candidates.
And in fact, he mentions every possible fear or hindrance that can and will try to overcome the love God has for us.
He lists them here in verses 38 and 39.
For I am sure he began that neither death nor life, certainly when dying takes place, you wonder, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come,
nor powers, nor height, nor depth.
