When Trump came down the escalator and gave that speech, I wrote a piece about how Trump understood the American electorate better than most of the other candidates.

But I didn't think he was going to win.

And then

There is this photograph that Jay Hong of the Associated Press took in July 2015.

So about three or four weeks after Trump got into the race.

And it was Trump meeting with the Angel families.

These were the families that had lost relatives to illegal immigrants or crimes by illegal immigrants.

And Trump stood there with his hands folded in front of him in this very humble posture.

posture and that photograph I think more than anything else communicated

The idea that somebody was finally listening to these people.

And nobody else had, among the Democrats, among the Republicans.

And from that moment you start to see Trump climb in the poles.

past everybody, past Chris Christie, past Jeb Bush.

And then he is leading the polls by the time he comes into that Republican debate.

So so the electorate was already kind of telling us which way they wanted to go.

But it was assumed that Meghan Kelly was gonna take Trump down in that debate.

And Scott then weighed in with Clown Genius.

I still didn't think Trump was going to win.

Until later.

Uh that is to say, win the nomination until later that year.
