You don't buy a fitness tracker to get a super accurate measurement of, say, how many calories you've burned.

You buy a fitness tracker to get fit, to help you lose weight.

So how good are they at that?

one of the big hurdles after you give someone a fitness tracker is to make sure they keep using it.

Market research shows that up to 50% of people stop using these devices within the first year of owning one.

A common criticism of fitness trackers is that they're just a novelty gadget for people who are already fit and healthy.

So Matesh Patel focused his research on groups that could benefit the most from these devices.

He took people who were overweight or obese and examined the effect of a daily financial incentive on their motivation to be active.

The control group didn't receive any incentive, but for the three experimental groups, the incentive was worth one dollar forty a day and was delivered under one of three conditions.
