What happened was initially among Latinos, and these would be the Californios, the native Californian residents of California, or the Mexicans, Peruvians, Chilenos, who were the predominant Latinos in the gold rush.
They were all treated with terrible racism.
They were not treated with the respect and dignity that Anglos received.
And so as I pointed in my book, when people are oppressed, they will seize at anything that gives them hope.
Yeah.
Initially, there were corridos or ballads that were made about Joaquin.
Many folk stories, many, many people claimed that they were related to him or that they knew him.
And most of the people in later years who claimed that they knew Joaquin were actually either not even born yet or were tiny children at the time Joaquin was killed.
So these myths began to grow right after the time he was killed.
John Rollin Ridge...
was the first Cherokee novelist, at least in the Western United States.
He himself had received similar treatment.
He and his family had been run out of the South on the Trail of Tears when the Cherokees were forced to relocate in Indian territory, now the state of Oklahoma.
And his father and grandfather were both killed in the violence over the Trail of Tears.
It created two factions in the Cherokee Nation, one that supported it, one that opposed it.
And so his own life experiences, he himself shot and killed one of the leaders of the opposing faction, and he fled Arkansas for California, eventually brought his wife and daughter out to meet him.
So he too was a fugitive from justice.
So he saw this Joaquin story.
as something that very much aligned with his own experiences.
