Now we've got a war in Iran where the rate of expenditure of munitions is very high as well.
Clearly, we need a recalculation of what is an adequate stockpile.
If you go back to the 1990s, just as an example, after the end of the Cold War, Pentagon planning was based on the assumption of being able to fight and win two medium-sized contingencies simultaneously.
And the hypothetical contingencies were war on the Korean Peninsula and war in the Middle East, perhaps with Iraq, perhaps with Afghanistan, but that we could fight and win two such conflicts simultaneously.
Today, we're having trouble fighting and winning one such conflict.
So budget levels are way down from what they were at the end of the Cold War.
And that's a whole different subject.
But my guess is the bulk of that $200 billion is
more ammunition, more munitions kind of across the board, which I think we were going to have to confront anyway.
Trump was going to propose a massive, or he has proposed a massive increase in the defense budget for the next fiscal year.
We're trying to make up really for 35 years of the belief that when the Soviet Union fell, we had reached the end of history, which sadly is not true.
Well, I think the two things are to open the Strait of Hormuz as quickly as possible.
And if I were to criticize the military, this would be the one area where I don't think they gave it priority early enough in the war.
And Iran has now shown they're fully capable of closing the Strait and really making transit through the Gulf itself dangerous.
That has to be fixed.
And second, longer term, even more important, get with the opposition in Iran, help them out, provide them resources, communications, money, weapons if they want it, to put more pressure on the Revolutionary Guard.
Because if our objective was regime change and we don't achieve it, we don't have the resolve to see it through, you're going to leave a wounded beast in Tehran.
that's gonna rebuild its nuclear program, rebuild its terrorist infrastructure.
And in a few years, we're gonna be right back where we were before this started.
Trump said during his 2016 acceptance speech at the Republican Convention describing the problems the country faced, I alone can fix it.
