Quite possibly we would end up sitting across the table from Fingers and he would be sort of questioning you about your savings record and so on.
So he was down into that level of detail.
But by all accounts, you know, a pretty tough boss.
He certainly crossed swords with members of his staff.
He appeared at the Employment Appeals Tribunal in 2011 after Irish Nationwide had been wound up in a very confrontational hearing with a manager from Monaghan who basically alleged that Fingalton had run Irish Nationwide as his own personal bank.
So the son of a Garda gets into the banking sector, but he had a different path initially, right?
Yeah, he went to All Hallows Seminary in Drumcondra in Dublin.
This would have been in the late 1950s.
And I did look this up in writing a piece on on Fingalton for the Irish Independent.
The number of vocations in Ireland at that point was absolutely staggering.
You literally had 500 vocations.
men, plus women entering the nuns, going into seminaries every year.
And Ireland was producing so many priests that had to export them.
There wasn't enough churches for them.
So I'm saying all that just because it was a very natural career progression for a young man of that time.
And he went into All Hallows, spent three years there and basically decided that the celibacy thing wasn't for him.
So left All Hallows and proceeded in different directions.
But there was always, if you like, that kind of a charitable streak to him.
And he eventually got a job with a charity that went on to become Concern.
It was called something slightly different then.
