So when I used to go to the Hill and specifically the Rayburn building where most of his committee meetings were on the judiciary,

uh, Republicans would even stop me and say, you know, I may not always agree with your father, but he's fair.

He's, you know, respectful and he lets me, I mean, he's firm in his beliefs, but he's lets me express what I have to express.

Uh, and I always appreciate that.

I appreciate that about him, but you know, my father wouldn't be afraid to speak up at all.

I mean, that was, you know, his, his political legacy and his political record

is one, whether you look at reparations, whether you look at the MLK holiday, you look at Medicare for all, he has a track record of doing the thing that nobody else is willing or wants to do and putting that on the record so that, you know, even if he, case in point, even though he's not here, those issues are still issues that are timely and relevant.

And he did it before folks had the courage or most anyone else had the courage to do it or he wouldn't have been the one to introduce the legislation.

Does it feel like they were just built different back then?

Yeah, yeah, I would say so.

I mean, I think it's everything you're saying, but I think it is also that most of us grew up with the rights that they fought for.

So there's a lack of understanding fundamentally that this stuff could go away.

And so one thing I've said during a conversation on my book tour is that I didn't inherit

money right i inherited rights and so for me i look at myself as a generational bridge and my responsibility is to help folks understand why politics and these things are so important and you know the material things you know yes they're byproducts of having these rights but if the rights go away right if you're unwilling to sacrifice to maintain these rights then all that other stuff that you like and you think is important and you value will also go away

No, absolutely.

I mean, that's I couldn't have said it better myself.

That's just that's just not how things work.

I think we we have been lulled into a state of comfort and passiveness now.

that one isn't sustainable.

And while you are, you know, asleep at the wheel, so to speak, there are folks that are working like the folks that wanted to overturn Roe v. Wade.
