But, so that was frustrating as an area volunteer, but, uh,
You know, I was there, I was there as an IRA volunteer.
I was an active service at the time.
And, uh, it was, it was, it was heartbreaking.
And then, you know, nine more men died after that.
And, uh, so 10 hunger strikers died in the blocks.
And we have to bear in mind that two hunger strikers died in England, you know, Michael Gohan and Frank Stagg, uh, at a different time.
So, you know, uh,
I remember going around bases in America and you'd see a base named after some guy who won the Medal of Honor in Vietnam, Korea, World War II.
And very often it was one for some act of heroism that might've been an impulsive act, not taken away from it, maybe jumping on a grenade to save your friends or charging a machine gun, whatever, right?
But an impulsive act in the heat of combat.
But these guys refused three meals a day, every day for two months, up to two months and more.
I think Bobby Sands survived for 72 days.
And they would, lovely, tasty meals, better meals than ever you would normally get, in the cell with them.
And basically those men refused life three times a day.
week after week for up to two months, you know, I don't know many acts of heroism anywhere like that, you know, so, uh,
We had very inspiring people.
And of course, it wasn't just the hunger strikers.
I mean, I've seen things that'll never be made public, that IRA guys done an act of service that would have won the Medal of Honor or the Victoria Cross in any other army.
But it's all lost to history.
