I made Sergeant in three years.

And I got out of the U.S.

Marines on the 29th of May, 1979.

At eight in the morning, I was discharged.

And at two o'clock that afternoon, I was on a connecting flight for Ireland.

No, no.

I mean, the IRA is a volunteer organization.

They call themselves volunteers, but I was a volunteer in every sense of the word.

I absolutely and totally volunteered.

I didn't have, I didn't volunteer from a sense of revenge from, uh, uh,

any other reason than my belief that the British government had no right to be in Ireland and that men and women were fighting for the full freedom and independence of Ireland.

But at this stage, I looked on Ireland as my country, not the United States.

Although, I mean, I don't have anything against the United States.

I just looked on Ireland as my country.

And I wanted to fight for it.

And I thought, I would have thought that, you know,

that's what you're supposed to do.

You're supposed to fight for your country.

So that's what I did.

And it took me a while to get to join up because I didn't know anybody in the IRA.
