Now, covering something like this would normally have fallen to Rebecca.
Like I said, this was her beat.
But she was moving into a new house that day and had no internet connection.
So I was asked to fill in.
I figured it would be one and done.
I had no idea that I'd be spending the next few years on Enron's trail.

After I was asked to write the story about Jeff Skilling's sudden resignation, my first move was pretty standard.
I called Enron's PR head at the time, Mark Palmer.
Palmer downplayed it.
Nothing to see here.
But I still wanted an interview with Skilling.
Palmer quickly got the CEO on the phone.
Skilling stuck to his story at first, that he resigned for personal reasons which he wouldn't go into.
But as the interview progressed, he started to sound troubled, almost depressed.
Then, to my surprise...
He went off script, and he said something that would help turn a two-day story into years of investigation.
He told me, right there on the phone, that he was disappointed by the fall in the stock price.
