Until I became a candidate for the Labour Party in my home area in deep Tory, North Yorkshire, and suddenly even there I found people came to me because they needed a voice, and you had this unique contribution and combination that was both the pastoral and the the sort of intellectual political challenge.

Well, it's been the the framing of my life for uh thirty-five, forty years.

I was a trade unionist first and then a Labour Party member and a Labour candidate, but in the end we ask a lot of our partners in politics and I'm married to an extraordinary woman called Jackie Bate and for a good number of years uh uh in John Smith's office and before that in Neil Kinnock's office and their teams

I was simply known as Mr Jackie Bate and she's backed me, supported me.

Let's put it this way, both of us have been around for a while.

Um two weeks.

And uh two weeks, you said.

Yeah.

We just knew.

Yeah.

And um I'm happy to say more than thirty years on, we're still very happy, still together.

And um still with a very happy home in Rotherham.
