We've been doing a fairly good job on recruiting new personnel.

I know we've gone to a number of uh of uh badge ceremonies just recently, and I know our fire department has also done a great job on recruiting new personnel.

So, you know, thank you to everybody that's been involved.

involved in that from HR to to the chiefs of both departments.

Um so it's not just that, but there are a lot of things going on in this city that require the police department to be out there and to be present at, whether it's you know, whether it's a events that are taking place, whether it's protests downtown in front of the courthouse, you know, i whether it's our spring break events, whatever it is that's driving the overtime, this is not to relieve

the chiefs of our departments from managing their overtime.

You know, th these gentlemen run a business that's a multi, you know, hundred million dollar business with hundreds of employees and I expect them to manage it as such.

I want to hold them accountable, but they also need the resources to do their job.

I trust them to do their job.

I trust them to know

when they are going to deploy their personnel in a way that keeps the community safe.

But we have to be honest and say, look, if it's seven million dollars in overtime for the police department on an annual basis, then let's budget seven million dollars.

Let's not pretend and budget five million dollars.

And that's what we have done again year in and year out.

We've set targets for the police department that are unrealistic for them to achieve.

And I just don't think that's fair to them and I don't think it's fair to the residents.

I can tell you 'cause I've done the study and the answer is it's always cheaper to use overtime than it is to hire more people.

So with within this this is called within a relevant range.

So within a relevant range, it's always cheaper to use overtime because you're not incurring the entire cost of a person, the equipment, the the uh training, the benefit c no the benefits.

It's it's pension, it's all those other things.
