Well, my mum used to... My mum was born in County Mayo in 1920 and she used to have this...

saying that i i used to think it was an old irish thing and then i said and it's not i think well maybe it's an old mayo thing and it's not well maybe it was a family thing and it's not and it turns out it was just my mum she's talked about the donkey that's starved to death because he's in the middle between two bales of straw which is a very my mum image um and i'm a bit like that at the moment i've been like that before about the two different things i've been thinking about writing um uh

and I can't quite choose between them.

The normal thing with that is I don't do anything because I tend to think that writing books, it's a bit like a relationship.

It's not like you have a list of pros and cons and you pick one.

It becomes obvious what you feel.

and you act on what you feel.

So I'm hoping it will become self-evident that, you know, novel A is the one that won't leave me alone.

Yes, well, it's more that it would just kind of pester me, you know.

It's just that thing of it sort of gets in you, okay, that's the one.

Yeah.

I know that's an unhelpfully vague answer, but I find books very easy to talk away, so I don't like to go into specifics.

But the one I had, the novel I had that I got furthest on and then keeled over was a novel that was basically the thing that was sort of inside –

what they sometimes say, inside the box, there's a story inside the story.
