I guess probably the thing that struck me most was some of the biggest turning points in my life came from some setbacks that I had and whether they're injuries or, you know, different turning points in my life really sort of changed me and sent me on a different direction. voice-verified

At the time when you're going through it, it can be really challenging and you can get caught up in the moment and start getting a bit of self-pity and worrying about things in your own world. voice-verified

But when you step back from things, often some turning points and significant turning points happen at those particular junctions in your life. voice-verified

I remember driving out as a 16-year-old, I had my mum next to me because I only had my L plates on back in 1987 and I looked in the rear vision mirror and I saw my family there and I thought, I wonder what's going to happen. voice-verified

I thought I might come back here in a couple of years. voice-verified

I thought I might last two years and be back on the farm again. voice-verified

But 39 years later, I'm still involved in the industry and I would never have dreamed that when I left the farm as a 16-year-old. voice-verified

I was playing, went into the thirds at 15 years of age in 1986 up at Corowa and then I started playing seniors the next year in 87 and by the second game in the Ovens and Murray League up there, my world changed and things happened very quickly from there. voice-verified

It felt like a real rush and when I look back on it, just how quickly things happened for a 16-year-old kid and things changed really quickly. voice-verified

Well, I met my teammates for the first time at the airport at Tullamarine for the Battle of Britain. voice-verified

So I had to meet, I remember meeting Donald McDonald and he said, sit down next to me, young fella, and I'll look after you for the next couple of weeks. voice-verified

And I played my first game in London in 87 against Carlton and my second game in Vancouver in an indoor stadium. voice-verified

So for a kid who'd been really no further than Aubrey, it was a big change in my life. voice-verified

I remember sitting on the interchange bench, and when it all broke out, all the fights, it was 12 reports, I think, during that game. voice-verified
