And he took the very controversial step at the time to actually journey to South Africa.
Because and we know, particularly in this country where, you know, there was that those Dunstores workers in 1985 who had protested against it.
You had rugby teams that refused to go there.
Some did go there despite the controversy.
Yeah, very much so.
Yeah, I would very much support the idea that he was doing something noble here.
You know, he was shining a light on artists like Ladysmith, Black Mambazo, Ray Fieri, people like Batiki Kumala.
These extraordinary musicians who, I suppose, were known to black South Africa, but not outside of that at all.
And one thing that he's always said is, you know, particularly when artists against, artists united against apartheid were saying, what on earth are you doing going there?

I'm highlighting people who are gifted and talented making extraordinary music that we don't get to hear in the West.

I mean, it would have been very different if he had gone with the blessing of white South Africa, the ruling class there.
I mean, he really wasn't.
He was trying to do something that was going to showcase...
extraordinary musicianship and not just to kind of embrace what South Africa was doing in music, in terms of indigenous music, but also to weld it to the Western canon as well, which is really exciting when you take elements of rock and pop
And you fuse it with these different sounds.
