What was she?
11, I think, when the war started.
And she never spoke about her experiences, Dan.
She never really talked about the war on Tyneside other than one major thing.
She said there was an incident in North Shields, which is on the banks of the Tyne near the coast where I grew up and where she lived with her family.
It was an incident.
where whole families died.
And I never explored it.
I never went any further until after her death a few years ago.
And I was mulling this over.
I was back in Newcastle visiting my sister.
And I decided to investigate this.
And that is when...
my absolute astonishment was piqued.
So I found this incident and it was one incident in North Shields.
And I'd never heard of this.
I'd never been to this site and I'd passed it on countless occasions on my way home from school.
May the 3rd, 4th, 1941, there was an air raid shelter in the centre of North Shields, about 200, 300 yards from my mum's house.
And the other thing my mum had said was that my grandmother, her mum had said, you'll never be evacuated and we'll never go to an air raid shelter.
