I stumbled down the hallway as fast as I could, vaulted over the couch, and slammed the front door behind me.

My shaking hands struggled to fit the key in the lock.

As I finally twisted the deadbolt into position, something flung its body against the flimsy wood.

There was a thick rust-like smell in the air, one that reminded me of the juice in the bottom of meat packets left out to spoil.
