Former members say that actually behind the scenes, there's a more troubling side to the organization, and that is that Chris Butler demands complete obedience from his devotees.
He demands complete secrecy.
They have to serve him and work for free in his kitchens and provide him with all sorts of things.
and that he controls major life decisions, that he tells people who they should marry and when, and things like that.
And so this is very much not what's publicly stated by the organization, and they definitely dispute characterizations of a cult.
Right back at the start of his sort of guruship, there were reports in the Hawaii press about that kind of thing.
And yes, indeed, a couple of devotees said they would do anything for him.
And a reporter said, even kill yourselves?
And they said yes.
She said that she hadn't really told me the full story last time, and that things were more complicated, that she had fallen out badly with the Science of Identity Foundation.
over quite separate issues of the way they handled allegations of abuse within the organization.
But I think that and her disenchantment with Tulsi Gabbard moving far to the right politically had led her to sort of come forward and correct the record, correct what she told me before.
And that was that Chris Butler was involved, according to Rebecca.
We talked, we messaged for a couple of weeks, and something that I asked her prompted her to check an old email account.
And in that email account, she found dozens of documents containing guidance for Tulsi Gabbard when she was in Congress.
And according to Rebecca, these documented the guidance and the directives that Chris Butler gave Gabbard.
That's right.
So about nine months earlier, deep within a company document that was related to someone I thought was in the Science of Identity Foundation and connected to Gabbard, was an email address, and it was at nineisles.com.
And when I asked Rebecca, she said, well, yes, that's the email domain used by Chris Butler's office to send out these political memos.
She said, in fact, I got lots of emails from Nine Isles addresses when I was working for Tulsi Gabbard and when I was working on projects for Chris Butler.
