She was born in 1879 at Talbingo in New South Wales.
Stella Maria Sarah Miles Franklin, the Australian novelist, was a farmer's daughter, perhaps I should say a grazier's daughter.
Fresh winds and crystal streams, iced by the snowy mountains, sang round her when she was young.
and her writing till the end of her life breathed of the Australian countryside.
Everybody believed that Miles was exceedingly poor.
She lived with the utmost frugality.
After her death it was revealed that she had hoarded up thousands of pounds and the entire sum was bequeathed in perpetuity
to provide an annual literary prize of at least £500 for the encouragement of Australian writing.
And even with this magnificent gesture, which is far and away the most generous that has ever been made to our literature, we have not yet heard the last of Stella, Maria, Sarah, Miles, Franklin.
Absolutely.
And that's the crux of the question, really.
It's not just an academic exercise.
This tells us whether there has been spread of melanoma to the lymph nodes.
And if there has been, then the treatment is very different.
And these days, we have available adjuvant drug therapy that is making a big difference to the outcome of patient survival.
The new immunotherapy drugs.
It's difficult to tell because it's very hard to assess in a prospective trial.
There was a very large trial, the first trial that was ever done in central node biopsy called the first multicenter selective lymphonectomy trial.
And the patients who were sentinel node positive, who had melanoma in their sentinel nodes, who had surgery and their sentinel node removed, did much, much better than the patients who subsequently became apparent with melanoma in their lymph nodes.
But of course they weren't a pre-randomized group, so you can't statistically say.
