Let's just talk about The Great Endeavour, which is one of your more recent projects, which premiered at the Venice Architecture Biennale in 2023.

And it's a film which offers a vision of how to reverse global warming, in effect.

Can you just explain the idea?

But just as you've worked with the car industry or the data companies or the fashion and cosmetic corporations, have you worked with some of these carbon intensive corporations, the oil producing corporations?

Head back into the rainforest and cut down more trees.

So does it not fill you with absolute despair, particularly now that you live in America, that it has a president who literally says, drill, baby, drill, we've got to do more, who overturned so many of those regulatory structures that have tried to address the problem for the last 20 years or so?

Is one of the problems, do you think, that we don't generally think about the future enough?

We don't want to think about the future because sometimes it's just too terrifying.

I think what's interesting about what you're putting on show at the Barbican is alongside the films and the installations, a lot of objects, a lot of things, whether that's the models or the costumes and the drawings.

And a lot of that possibly goes back to the puppets and the models you made as a kid.

There's always a human dimension to your work.

But what about.

virtual reality and artificial intelligence?

What do those two things do for your work?

You say we, the corporations...

that are generating all of this energy and all of this artificial intelligence, they don't want to acknowledge that, though, do they?

And in terms of your work, how do you define success, a successful project?

What does success look like to you?

And for all the reasons we've been discussing, it must feel sometimes like you're pushing a huge boulder up a hill.
