Well, I was very excited about being able to claim it as mine rather than seeing that dreaded paragraph in every profile, you know, tragic childhood, blah, blah, blah.
I was actually quite happy to be able to say, no, this is what happened and to describe the feeling of...
guilt that a child can have, even though they're completely innocent.
The feelings of confusion, the feelings of having to just carry on, having to put one foot in front of another.
It was actually very exciting to be able to explore that.
And you have multiple roles on this film as writer, director, co-star, because you're playing the matriarch.
What was it like being on the other side of the camera?
It was the biggest thrill I've ever had.
No, I mean, look at the cast I've got.
I mean, it was like being given a fleet of Ferraris.
It was absolutely amazing to have these incredible actors around me.
Scarlett Johansson, Sienna Miller, Emily Beecham.

But did you suddenly feel a different kind of agency on set, you know, a different sense of power and the dynamic of the way a film is made?
Absolutely, yeah.
I mean, I can't recommend being an actor...
In one's own film when it's one's first film, because it is very, very difficult to sort of separate and sort of observe the other actor while you're acting with them.
