It's a delusion because when you investigate who am I, which is like one of the core Zen meditative practices, heavy duty, you just sit and you ask yourself, who am I or what am I? And then you just listen to what the mind comes up with, all of which is wrong. And then it can lead to you realizing that you're not who you think, you're not the story of you.
